Smoke, disrupted transportation routes, reduced visibility, equipment displacement, and rapidly changing evacuation conditions can affect communities located hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away.

Wildfire Smoke Creates Widespread Health Risks

Environment and Climate Change Canada warned that wildfire smoke would continue causing poor air quality and reduced visibility across much of southern Ontario. Wind direction and weather conditions can change quickly, meaning air quality may deteriorate over a short period—even in areas located far from active fires.

Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter known as PM2.5. These microscopic particles can travel deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Children, older adults, pregnant women and people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions face the greatest risk, although prolonged exposure can also affect healthy individuals.

Residents in affected areas have been advised to reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities, keep doors and windows closed when possible and use effective indoor air filtration. People who must remain outdoors for extended periods may consider wearing a properly fitted respirator, such as an N95 mask.

According to Ontario’s official air-quality monitoring service, London’s AQHI was forecast to reach 10+ on the evening of July 15, while several other communities across the province also entered the highest-risk category. Environment and Climate Change Canada

Northern Wildfires Affect Distant Communities

Although many active fires are located in remote parts of northern Ontario, smoke from these fires has spread across southern Canada and into parts of the Midwestern and northeastern United States.

Reuters reported that smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario pushed Toronto’s air quality into the highest-risk category. At the time, hundreds of wildfires were active across Canada, with more than 100 classified as out of control. Some remote First Nations communities faced evacuation as uncontrolled fires threatened residents, transportation routes and essential infrastructure. Reuters

The situation highlights the enormous operational scale of modern wildfire response. Emergency teams may need to manage firefighters, forest rangers, evacuation vehicles, water tankers, portable equipment and temporary command centres across multiple regions simultaneously.

In such an environment, knowing where people and resources are located is critical to emergency decision-making.

Building a Connected Wildfire Response Network

Wildfire response requires more than monitoring the fire itself. Emergency agencies must coordinate personnel, vehicles, portable equipment and aerial resources across large and constantly changing operational areas.

A connected emergency-response network can combine personnel positioning, fleet tracking, asset tracking and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle operations. Together, these technologies provide command centres with a clearer understanding of where resources are located, how they are being deployed and whether they remain within designated safety zones.

The objective is not simply to collect more data. It is to transform location and status information into faster warnings, better resource allocation and more coordinated emergency action.

Personnel Tracking for Field Safety

Firefighters, forest rangers, rescue teams and lone workers frequently operate in remote locations where traditional communication may be unreliable. Dense forests, mountains, smoke and damaged infrastructure can make it difficult for command centres to maintain contact with field personnel.

Real-time personnel positioning allows emergency managers to view the latest reported locations of field teams. Geofences can be established around active fire zones, evacuation areas and restricted routes, generating alerts when personnel enter or leave designated regions.

SOS functionality provides an additional layer of protection. If a firefighter becomes injured, disoriented or trapped by changing fire conditions, an emergency positioning device can transmit an alert and provide the person’s latest known location. This information may help rescuers identify the closest response team and shorten the time required to organize assistance.

Location history can also help command centres review previous movements, understand how teams reached their current positions and evaluate possible evacuation routes.

Fleet Tracking for Emergency Vehicles

Emergency operations depend on fire engines, ambulances, water tankers, evacuation buses, rescue vehicles and logistical support fleets. These vehicles often travel across remote roads while facing reduced visibility, road closures, and rapidly changing access conditions.

Real-time fleet tracking allows emergency coordinators to monitor vehicle locations and identify the nearest available unit. Route history can help managers understand where vehicles have travelled, while geofences can be established around fire zones, evacuation centres and temporary command posts.

When a new emergency alert is received, the platform can help identify which vehicle is closest and which route may offer the most practical response. This can reduce unnecessary travel and support faster deployment of personnel and equipment.

Vehicle information can also support fuel planning, maintenance management and resource allocation during prolonged wildfire operations. When emergency fleets must remain active for days or weeks, visibility into vehicle movement and operational status becomes increasingly important.

Asset Tracking for Critical Equipment

Wildfire response teams rely on a wide range of portable equipment, including water pumps, generators, communication devices, medical supplies, lighting systems, temporary shelters and environmental monitoring instruments.

These assets are frequently transported between warehouses, staging areas, evacuation centres and remote field locations. Without an effective tracking system, equipment may be misplaced, left at an earlier operating site or moved without authorization.

Asset tracking provides visibility into where critical resources have been deployed. Movement history can help managers review how equipment was transferred, while geofence alerts can indicate when an asset leaves an assigned storage or operating area.

Long-life tracking devices are particularly suitable for non-powered equipment that may remain in remote locations for extended periods. By maintaining visibility of these assets, emergency agencies can reduce losses and ensure that critical resources are available when teams need them.

UAV Operations for Aerial Situational Awareness

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles can provide aerial visibility in areas that may be difficult or dangerous for ground personnel to access.

When equipped with cameras, thermal-imaging sensors or environmental monitoring equipment, UAVs can help identify fire boundaries, locate potential hotspots, inspect damaged infrastructure and assess blocked transportation routes. They may also support search-and-rescue operations by examining large or inaccessible areas more quickly than ground teams.

UAV imagery becomes even more valuable when connected with the positions of firefighters, vehicles and field equipment. A command centre can compare aerial observations with real-time location data to understand whether personnel or assets are approaching a dangerous area.

For example, if aerial imagery shows that a fire is moving toward a field team, command personnel can review the team’s position, identify nearby vehicles and evaluate possible evacuation routes. If an SOS alert is activated, UAV observations may help responders assess terrain and environmental conditions before sending a rescue team.

UAV operations must comply with local aviation regulations and be carefully coordinated with firefighting aircraft. Drones should support—not interfere with—professional aerial firefighting and emergency aviation operations.

Connecting Ground and Aerial Operations

The greatest operational value comes from combining personnel, fleet, asset and UAV information within a coordinated response environment.

If a firefighter activates an SOS alert, the command centre should be able to identify the individual’s latest location, locate the nearest rescue vehicle, determine which emergency equipment is available and review aerial information about surrounding terrain or fire conditions.

Similarly, if a UAV identifies a new hotspot, managers can check whether personnel, vehicles or valuable equipment are located nearby. Geofences may then be adjusted and alerts issued to affected teams.

This connected approach gives emergency managers four essential layers of visibility:

People: Where are firefighters, rangers and rescue personnel?

Vehicles: Which emergency units are available and closest to the incident?

Assets: Where are pumps, generators, communication systems and medical supplies?

Aerial intelligence: What are UAVs observing across the affected area?

Connecting these layers helps transform isolated data into practical situational awareness.

Kingwo’s Perspective: From Location Data to Coordinated Action

The worsening wildfire situation in Canada highlights the importance of building stronger visibility and communication into emergency-response systems.

Kingwo IoT provides integrated positioning solutions that can support personnel safety, emergency fleet management and critical asset visibility.

Personnel tracking devices can provide location updates, geofence alerts and SOS notifications for firefighters, forest rangers and lone workers. Vehicle trackers can help command centres monitor fire engines, rescue vehicles, water tankers and support fleets. Long-life asset trackers can maintain visibility of generators, portable pumps, communication equipment and other resources deployed across temporary operating areas.

Through Kingwo’s self-developed platform, APP and API capabilities, positioning data can also be integrated with third-party emergency-management and UAV systems. This allows organizations to develop a broader operational environment without requiring every component to come from the same supplier.

Kingwo does not position UAVs as replacements for ground monitoring or professional emergency aviation. Instead, UAV observations can complement IoT location data by connecting aerial intelligence with the real-time positions of personnel, vehicles and equipment.

Technology cannot prevent every wildfire or eliminate the dangers faced by emergency responders. However, reliable positioning, timely alerts and centralized resource visibility can help organizations identify abnormal situations earlier and make better-informed decisions when conditions change rapidly.

References: Environment and Climate Change Canada, Ontario Air Quality Health Index, Reuters.

By Kailiang Tang
Acting Marketing Director, Kingwo IoT

Wildfire smoke has spread across Toronto and large parts of southern Ontario, creating dangerous air conditions, reducing visibility and prompting authorities to advise residents to limit outdoor activities.
